Deirdre Murtha grew up immersed in Irish traditional music and found her way to chanteys in her 20s after singing in Irish sessions and participating in The Christmas Revels in New York City. A fellow Reveler told her about the monthly chantey sings at South Street Seaport, and Deirdre got hooked on the robust choruses, harmonies, work song tradition, and history.
A coastal gal from birth, she has been a member of both The NY Packet and The Johnson Girls for 30 years, performing in maritime festivals throughout the US and in Europe. She has led a monthly chantey sing in Rowayton, CT, for 15 years, and is a board member and performer for the Connecticut Sea Music Festival in Essex, CT.
When not wearing those hats, Deirdre teaches early childhood music and dance programs in schools, libraries, and camps.
