Born a Pisces on St. Patrick’s Day, there is no doubt that chanteys, maritime and Irish songs were in Bonnie Milner’s future. Her interest was sparked upon hearing them sung at New York’s South Street Seaport, the Eagle Tavern and throughout pubs and seaports here and abroad. A “sea” change took place when she befriended Stan Hugill, the last working shantyman. His influence and encouragement prompted her to sing these catchy ditties.
Undoubtably having shared her life with the late Dan Milner brought Irish ballads and songs into her repertoire and heart. Their many trips to Ireland and England solidified her appreciation of such a profound singing tradition.
She is a founding member of the internationally acclaimed all-woman maritime song quartet, The Johnson Girls, and a member of South Street Seaport’s New York Packet. Bonnie has taught chantey classes and webinars at Mystic Seaport Museum and South Street Seaport Museum as well as at schools and libraries. As a board member and assistant artistic director of the CT Sea Music Festival, she keeps alive their mission of preserving and encouraging traditional maritime songs and music. Her songs have delighted audiences throughout North America and abroad. At festivals, concerts or teaching, Bonnie brings a wealth of knowledge and unbounding enthusiasm.
