Fiona Stowell is a 20-year-old fiddler based in Boston, MA, where she’s studying at Berklee College of Music. She’s been playing since the age of four and performing for nearly as long.
Fiona’s roots are in old-time, Cape Breton, and New England fiddle traditions, though she loves exploring a wide range of styles. She’s also a singer and Celtic dancer and has sung throughout New England with Village Harmony and Northern Harmony. In 2019, Fiona started performing with Young Tradition Vermont, touring in New York City, Maine, Cape Breton, and Quebec. She served as Youth Commission Leader in 2023 and Youth Artist Leader for the YTV Touring Group in 2024.
For many years Fiona was closely mentored by Pete Sutherland, learning hundreds of tunes by ear and gratefully receiving his wisdom on musicianship, set composition, and stage presence until the end of his life in 2022. She is committed to carrying forward a fundamental concept from Pete: the importance of being a tradition bearer—not only sharing a tune, but also its history and context, and whose playing shaped it. These days, Fiona performs in a duo with her brother, aptly named Fiona & Emmett, and with her band, Sap Line.
