Online events August 8 – August 15!
For Adults & Families
Your community is here
Welcome to Cascade of Music and Dance online! Our all-camp gatherings (Monday, Wednesday, & Saturday) will provide a great opportunity for everyone to share songs, skits, talents, and stories, while there will be a variety of other classes throughout the week providing plenty of opportunities to connect with your community.
All three gatherings have the same Zoom link, which is password-protected – we have emailed the password to Cascade campers already, but if you missed this or are looking to join us for the first time, please email camp@cdss.org and we would be happy to send it to you. All other classes have individual registration links and you will receive the access link by email when you sign up. All events are free of charge and open to all, so please come along and bring your friends!
If you’re on Facebook, you can also join our community group to connect with other campers.
Event | Date & Time (all times EDT) | Description |
---|---|---|
Opening Gathering | August 10 7pm-8pm | Welcome to Camp! Program Director Adina Gordon will be your host for a camp gathering, featuring a variety of performances from staff and campers. |
Moth-style Storytelling Workshop | August 10-14 9pm-10pm | Moth-style storytelling involves the telling of true personal stories, without notes, within specific time parameters. Participants will work together in a collaborative workshop environment to generate ideas for personal stories, and to develop their stories. The workshop will culminate in a “story slam” for workshop participants. This is a daily session from Monday through Friday, and is designed for people who can attend all five sessions. Led by Carl Levine. |
Art Class | August 11 10am | Open studio time to work on your projects. Led by Leslie Sudock. |
Kids’ Class (ages 9-12)! | August 11 1pm | English country dance is fun, even when dancing together via Zoom! We will take an energetic ECD and explore listening and being creative as single dancers and dancing together virtually. Ages 9-12, led by Kappy Laning. |
Honky Tonk Night | August 11 8pm-9pm | Dust off those dancing shoes, roll up the rug, we’re going Honky Tonkin’! We’ll start with a brief lesson in Two-Step basics (with adaptation for solo dancing) and then dance to the music of your fave Campers and Staff. Don’t miss a minute of this all-star evening. Show us your party attire, extra points for background ambience! Hosted by Janine Smith. |
Tunes ‘N Stuff | August 12 1pm-2pm | A chance to learn a cool new tune from fiddle legend Audrey Knuth! Audrey will teach a tune and talk about ideas for how to have fun with it. Expect some discussion of fiddle technique but all instruments welcome. |
Percussive Dance | August 12 6pm-7pm | This class will be an hour of sean nós (Irish old-style dance), a solo percussive dance style. We will explore rhythm, musicality, and movement. The class will be led by Mo Brachfeld, who has already been successfully teaching online dance and is excited to bring this class to the Cascade community. |
Midweek Gathering | August 12 7pm-8pm | Program Director Adina Gordon will be your host for a camp gathering, featuring a variety of performances from staff and campers. |
Kids’ Class (ages 0-4)! | August 13 10am | 20-30 min of interactive, creative, hands-on music for little ones and their parents. Songs, dances, stories, and instruments! Please have a homemade shaker on hand: a lidded jar with beans, rice, or seeds, or something like that! Ages 0-4, led by Rachel Bell. |
Teen Hangout | August 13 1pm | Imogen Mills will spend a relatively chill hour with the teens—mostly to say hi and see each other again! There will be chatting, games, and maybe some music and dancing. |
Dance Across the Country! | August 13 7pm-8:30pm | Three camps in one! CDSS’ Dance, Music & Spice (Camp Cavell), Cascade of Music & Dance (Camp Louise), and American Dance & Music Week (Pinewoods) join forces for an awesome mix of contra and ECD via Zoom. Hosted by Adina Gordon, Gaye Fifer, and many others. |
Art Class | August 14 10am | Open studio time to work on your projects. Led by Leslie Sudock. |
Kids’ Class (ages 5-8)! | August 14 1pm | Move it, Shake it, Sing it. Join Sue Hulsether for a fun time of singing games, rhythm, and movement. Be prepared to laugh, wiggle, and learn. If you want, you could bring these things with you to the zoom class: a stuffed animal, and some kind of homemade instrument. (Easy shaker/scraper instrument ideas: a jar or yogurt container filled with rice, or a cheese grater with something to rub on it.) OR just come as you are. Ages 5-8, family members are welcome, too! |
Staff Concert | August 14 7pm-7:30pm | Enjoy music from our talented camp staff—with performances from Dave Weisler and Peregrine Road (Karen Axelrod & Rachel Bell). |
Racial Justice Workshop | August 14 & 17 7:30pm-9pm | Radical Vulnerability is a 2 part program/package, created by Dr. Nia Nunn, that nurtures/engages participants through/in a confronting journey. A self-study within a collective, this work centers anti-racist consciousness and honoring a Black femme oral tradition, it is a short and transformative adventure that includes storytelling, writing exercises, literacy events, listening, reading, watching, thinking, feeling, and breathing -together. The organizations and communities that experience this intense, yet graceful level of radical vulnerability with Dr. Nia Nunn can expect to create a more authentic and honest relationship between its members, ultimately establishing a healthy and even dynamic culture of space. |
Farewell Gathering | August 15 3pm-4pm | As our virtual camp week comes to a close, we’ll come together one more time for a farewell gathering and parade. |
Join us back at Camp Louise next year! Cascade of Music & Dance 2021 will take place August 16 – August 22.
